The soul standard "Land of 1000 Dances," first recorded by Chris Kenner in 1962 and turned into a Top 10 hit by Wilson Pickett in 1966, name-checks a handful of the dances that were sweeping the nation at the time, including the Jerk, the Watusi, the Mashed Potato and the Pony. Three decades later, Prince attempted to build upon the last of those by creating a dance he called the "Horny Pony."

Calling it "the dance that conservatives really most despise," Prince raps its instructions: "Movin' your legs from left to right / Your arms up high like an eagle in flight / Keep your hands shakin' like a leaf on a tree / Jack-be-nimble - whew - you're doin' it, see."

The song was originally slated for inclusion on his 1991 album Diamonds and Pearls instead of "Gett Off." There were also plans to put out an EP with those two songs, "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" and a different version of "Cream," but it was pulled. After a nine-minute version of "Gett Off" was sent to club DJs and radio stations and got a strong response, Prince removed "Horny Pony' from Diamonds and Pearls, but still gave it a release as the b-side to "Gett Off." However, Prince had previously included "Horny Pony" into his rap on another Diamonds and Pearls track, "Push," which references nearly all of the record's other song titles. In an apparent attempt to explain all this, the CD's back cover still has the "Horny Pony" title printed in red ink over "Gett Off' in the track listing.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for Prince, this wasn't even the first time he had attempted to describe this dance. Cat Glover's rap on "Alphabet St." concludes with a call to "jerk your body like a horny pony would." And he appears to have some type of fixation on ponies at the time. PrinceVault notes that his archives contain three songs -- "She Pony," "Pony Ride" and "My Pony" -- recorded between 1985 and 1990, the last of those featured George Clinton on lead vocals. And of course, the back cover of his second album features him riding a Pegasus naked.
